Chaotic female elf ranger

Introduction

Once I had finally ascended with my favourite characters, samurai and wizard and with deemed-to-be-difficult touriest, my gf insisted me going for elf ranger as she started playing with it. When I first started playing with this character I learnt it the hard way that this character differed quite a big from the last three. Yeah, that bow definetly has a function...

Starting the journey

I started with character something like str 13, dex 16, con 16, int 13, wis 13, cha 7. I reached experince level 8 rather quickly, reaching only dungeon level 7 meanwhile. My pet died in a battle against some dwarves on level 5 or so. After gaining some experience, I turned back to gnomish mines starting from level 3. Falling a few levels down, I finally cleared out the mines and reached the town: chaotic temple but general store nowhere to find! The shops were next to useless - except the lighting store where I grabbed seven cursed candles to go with. Getting to the bottom was quite disappointing -- a polymorph trap blocking my way further to get the luckstone - or so I thought.

Cursing the polymorph-trap, I went back up and solved sokoban and acquired a bag of holding. Wandering around looking for a miracle, I found some vault and made some dontaions to get by AC a bit lower. And oh yeah, those red dragon scales got a bit harder with a proper scroll... such nice piece of armor to go with. I went to the quest and got the Bell and Longbow of Diana.

Getting back to the gnomish mines, I bumped into some fancy boots which proved to be speed boots. At the bottom, I zapped wand of teleportation on myself a few times until I got past the trap. I got the stone and went back up to find out I was carrying luckstone all the time. *ahem*

Going to Gehennom

I visiten Medusa island a bit before going back to the mines to find out the whole place was full of peaceful gremlins... As I had already cleared out the baddies and water monsters, I just slipped the ring of levitation in my finger and went past the waters. After killing Medusa, I already had collected speed boots, shield of reflection, cloak of displacement and grey dragon scale mail which I got from water demon I "found" from a fountain.

Still going down, I passed the castle, killed some dragons (no black here) and got the WoW. I asked for some helm of brilliance and gauntlets of dexterity and continued descending.

Demons

I decided to descend to the bottom before taking Vlad. I started descending and clearing out the mazes, falling under the demons one by one. You know, it's a real pain to have climb up the stairs to get right next to a demon and _then_ having to find way back to the stairs up while trying to take care of the monsters the demon is summoning... Well, I didn't fall under Asmodeus, but for some reason he noticed me a bit early and made my life very difficult: having Asmodeus, DIspater and Geryon smack you all three together is not fun!

The other demons were more like childs play. Juiblex died after three strikes with +0 Frost Brand having no time to make me ill. Orcus was a bit more difficult summoning some friends to play with me. Nothin extraordinary here, though, and overall, I was quite pleased that noone managed to summon Demogorgon

Before the end game

I got to the bottom, marked the place and went back to Vlad's tower to get the Candelabrum and the Bell which I left there. I even decided to wish for Magicbane as I really didn't like my +0 Frost Brand and my Longbow wasn't the best possible all-purpose weapon.

I took the stuff down and went to get the Wizard. Or two. I smacked them both down, recovered the Book and went back to the bottom. After having a small ritual down at the bottom of Hell, I descended one more level, kicked some high priest butt and finally got hold of the Amulet.

The end game

Plane of earth was reasonably easy although the folks at the beginning resisted my will to get past them for a while. WoY refused get asleep and I wanted to save my second potion of paralysis for later. Anyway, portal was only a few zaps away so I never saw the Wizard for another time.

Plane of air was a real pain. I got to the other side rather easily but I couldn't find the portal. I battled against dragons, air elementals and Archon at the same times trying to survive. Having my last potion of full healing and potion of paralysis blow didn't help. Even steam vortexes didn't help. Finally, I died twice inside some evil air elementals. :-( Good thing I wished for an amulet of life saving and found another one somwhere in the Gehennoom. After dying twice, I finally managed to clear out the air elementals. After that, taking care of the rest was much more easier as I could retreat and let myself heal up a bit. Finally I found the portal. The bad news was that I didn't have any means to heal myself anymore...

Plane of fire was way too easy. The portal was only seven steps from me so I didn't have time to get know the monsters here too well. Only a few fire elements, two salamanders and couple of demons. And a dragon. Oh well, big deal. Plane of water was only a lot faster than I expected.

So I finally reached the astral plane. I decided to start from the temple on my right. I quickly got past Famine, found the temple to be one of Venus. I actually cleared the whole place up while going back -- and to my surprise, my Angel was still alive. Next I would try temple on left. Neutral temple must always be on center, right?

I killed Pestilence, got into the temple, found out it was of Mercurius and turned back. Now I would have to get past Pestilence and then face Death and Famine at one as they both were in the middle, waiting for me. Having no choice, I hit the Death dead and fought my way thought angels and priests/priestresses to the temple. Famine was right next to me when I finally reached the alter. I took the amulet from my neck and offered it to the Mars.

Final words

Playing as elf ranger was quite hard, having very little hit points and not being able to have any good attack spells. Ranger taught me that having +6 bow and +4 arrows can be very effective against any enemy. I couldn't have done this without it.
